When in Rome, do as the Romans Do

“When in Rome, do as the Romans do” is a well-known ancient proverb that advises when visiting a foreign land, follow the customs of those who live in it. The framework for joining a new team is not much different, but what happens when the customs encourage both the negative and positive side of the organization political model? Individuals can decide to participate, manage the situation, or bow out gracefully. A closer look Tuckman’s Storming Phase of team development will help team leaders effectively harness the high emotions and micro conflicts that exist within high-performing teams.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Who gets a microphone at the “political roundtable?”
  • The positive and negative side of the organization political model: the jungle metaphor
  • Behaviors of the politically savvy during the storming phase of team development
  • 10 things politically savvy team members always get right
  • Strategies for making it through the storming phase of team development
  • Achieving business outcomes for the future of team engagement
